A site called Under Mars is compiling digital photos taken by US soldiers in Iraq. It posts them as they're received - unedited and uncensored - along with captions from the photographers. Given government attempts to control the dissemination of imagery from Iraq, one can't help thinking that this site could be headed for trouble.
Here's what the sitemaster says about the project:
The goal of this site is exclusively to share photos of the experience of war, without politicizing, censoring, or editing....I have presented the captions as they were given to me and have not censored or edited them. I do not know what motivated their titling, nor have I asked, nor do I intend to. My goal is only to record them. These are extreme experiences and I make no claim to understand the feelings involved. It's a fascinating site - with many powerful and sometimes beautiful images - but please note that some photos are extremely graphic, and disturbing beyond your worst nightmares.
