It Can't Happen Here

Same-day voter registration has been blocked repeatedly by Republican scaremongers in this country, who claim that it rolls out a red carpet for fraud and abuse. But in Iraq, oddly enough, it's simply another jewel in democracy's crown:

"We allowed the population of Mosul and Anbar province to register themselves the same day as polling," said Hareth Mohammad Hassan, the commission's energetic 33 year old deputy director. "A voter can just show his Iraqi documents and picture ID, get registered and vote."
So which is it: Are we allowing the Iraqis to undermine democracy by setting up an inherently corrupt voting system, or is same-day registration a perfectly reasonable idea that could be implemented in every state in America?

Hey Phila--

Just wanted to stop by and thank you for chiming in in my dispute with Visual Politics last night. It was good to have the back-up; I've been getting flamed over there so much lately by various folks that it's starting to wear me down a bit...

Anyway, I appreciate it.

No problem! I noticed that, and I don't understand it. You're far more gentlemanly and levelheaded than I am, and I can't imagine why people would be taking issue with you...unless, of course, they're not actually being sincere. Which did seem to be the case with those gentlemen last night.

Anyway, to quote the Simpsons, "Stickin' together's what good waffles do!"

Same day voter registration has always been possible in Canada without there ever having been any problem.
