Sunday Music Blogging

Wiley's career seems to have spanned the 30s through the 50s, when she seems to have had some of her most successful recordings - i'm interested to hear the 50s recordings to see what end of the jazz spectrum of the time she fell out on

by the way, you might be interested to check out the jazz violinist at the beginning of the first lillian roth clip in this post

the unique style of this violinist should make him instantly recognizable to early jazz fanatics

They're very much in the traditional / torch song mode. Her voice was quite a bit different by then, though...the vibrato is much more pronounced, for one thing, and she's a bit more mannered overall.

They're nice recordings, by and large, but I find 'em kind of hard to listen to.

Hope you're well, Phila. I miss you.

I wandered in because of the Sunday music thread in December (13th, IIRC) that turned into a discussion about the discussions at Eschaton.

So that's what's on my mind.

What bemuses/interests me on that otherwise unimportant subject is that Eschaton long ago became just like a church (or any gathering/community of regulars), with people vying for power and authority and to "be on top", and sniping and bitching and slamming other people in order to do so.

Sociology 101, IOW.

It happened during the campaign, and it's happening again, and all the items noted in those comments on that thread were true and to be trusted. Or something.

Anyway, it was on my mind, and now it isn't. As Thers said then: We'll always have Bouphonia.

And even with word verification, posting comments is SO much easier here!

I'm still pretty much ignoring the sniping at Eschaton and hope fervently that I do not inadvertently contribute to the problem over there.

That said, I do wish those who have left would come back, if only to elevate the conversation.

Eschaton is like the College Party That Never Ends. There are great people, and there are assholes. Sometimes you have to go out for some air. And sometimes you want to just go home. But the party never ends ...

Clearly there are things that can be said in one place which can't be said in another.

Which is another interesting thing altogether.

Sorry for hijacking your comments section, Phila. Didn't mean to fashion a Frankenstein of sorts.

I'm fine, Vicki. Busy, but fine. Thanks!

Ditto. Though for me, the stumbling block comes even earlier: How does one even come to imagine that there is such a position, especially in that kind of forum, let alone decide to pursue it?

But the party never ends....

True. Which puts me in mind of an old song.

Sure, I can see that. But there are various ways for this stuff to work itself out, depending on what standards generally apply, and some are less destructive than others. I suppose it boils down, again, to the difference between arguing and fighting.

As Thers said then: We'll always have Bouphonia.

Or failing that, Adventus. I hear the proprietor is very hospitable.

Pshaw. Your comments on anything and everything are always welcome here.
